Meaning
Superfluous - (adj.) Obsolete. possessing or spending more than enough or necessary; extravagant.
“The Superfluous Man” is a 19th century literary concept originating from Russia. It generally relates to having ability or talent that generally did not fit the state form of employment. The general concept is an unconventional ability that often goes against a society.
The typical “Superfluous Man” was one born into privilege, yet may be prone to taking risks that may cut short the wealth or life he had. This is a person who gambles, and duels. The general non conformity of their actions often make them stand out in society. Wikipedia says that, “Their actions can be attributed to their self destructive nature and their disregard for the social values and standards of the time. The consequence is a man who is filled with ennui, often causing distress to whatever occupies his attention which is often members of the opposite sex.”
I chose this as I feel it can apply to me in some very key parts:
- Non conformity to societies views
- Ennui, or lack of interest due to boredom
- Latent talent which does not fit practically in with the typical employment model
I will be posting mainly about my life, but really it will be whatever can occupy my attention for that particular moment.
